You mean "sell", not "trade" ;-) It should be safe to buy shares between the record date and the ex date, at least if your mind-set is that those new shares will not have the TRW-shares, and then you might get the TRW-shares as a bonus (as you stated and also gave examples of; things aren't 100% certain)
