Bill and Paul did not really have any idea where the MS operating system would take them. Back in 1975 when they started Microsoft and in 1980 when they entered into a partnership with IBM to bundle their operating system with IBM's personal computers they had no idea that their operating system would become the dominant operating system for the next 35 years. Nobody in 1980 knew what the future value would be for an operating system for personal computers. Personal computers were relatively knew to the consumer and business markets. On the contrary, we know exactly what is needed on the photonics roadmap and what the TAM is.
Nobody back then could project that Microsoft's operating system would become so dominant. If some other company would had entered into a partnership with IBM for an operating system (instead of Microsoft) it could have been that operating system that would have dominated and history would have been a little different.
There doesn't appear to be a reasonable alternative to LWLG's technology. In other words, there is no real competition.
