Wonder where Siemens and NEC are planning to get their "3GPP standard" UTRA TDD chips(i.e., W-CDMA WTDD chips) and the "harmonized" TD-CDMA chips(i.e., W-CDMA NTDD chips designed to inter-operate with the 3GPP standard W-CDMA FDD and WTDD chips)? If I'm reading the following announcement correctly they are going to need 4 types of TDD chips for these new base stations and handsets(see the bolded statements).

IDCC demonstrated functional prototypes of the "3GPP standard" UTRA TDD chipsets at Cannes this year, and has work underway to design TD-SCDMA chips based on what we have been told. In addition, we know that IDCC is working in partnership with Infineon to develop a multi-mode GSM/W-CDMA "FDD" chipset that could be announced for commercial availability at any time.

Siemens and NEC unify TDD solutions with TD-SCMA

Siemens IC Mobile and NEC are to observe the recommendations of the international standardisation body third generation partnership project (3GPP) and unify their time division duplex (TDD)-based solutions with the time division synchronous code division multiple access TD-SCDMA radio technology.

Within the radio network for UMTS, known as Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA), TDD and FDD are generally accepted as a universal standard for 3G/UMTS. For that reason many network operators in several European countries have already been granted UMTS radio licenses for TDD.

"With network operator customers in more than 75 countries worldwide it is our goal to address the issues of various regional markets and their different needs, while at the same time promoting the international standardization of mobile radio standards on the solution side", said Dr. Valentin Chapero Rueda, president of networks, information and communication mobile group.

"Our decision to offer UTRA TDD to all markets in a worldwide standardised form means that we are complying with 3GPP and are in a position to provide very powerful 3G technologies with UTRA FDD (W-CDMA) and UTRA TDD - both in Asia and Europe."

By offering a version of TDD enhanced by TD-SCDMA as a harmonised UTRA TDD, IC Mobile said it would be able to create a strong market basis for this technology. If UTRA TDD is used by network operators worldwide as a standard, the firm believes international roaming could be ensured.

Extending the performance spectrum of UTRA TDD by TD-SCDMA makes it possible to offer UTRA TDD for area-wide usage purposes (so-called macro-application) in the future, adding a higher market potential to the technology.
