Books are a perfect example of something that is ripe to go digital. In particular textbooks that are expensive and require frequent updates.

The weight of textbooks is enough to make people switch.
A nice lightweight tablet type PC..not a franklin books handheld..... will be how books will be delivered. And they will have motion video, sound effects..etc...for those that want them....for a textbook...there will be demos... or they will hear actual snippets of important things...(think of how encarta has wavs of famous speeches, for example).

If I recall correctly, a best seller sells about 75K books..and an average book sells 35K....(units)

Now....with digital delivery.....many more people can have access to that content...much more cheaply....and there will be a great proliferation of content.... all easily readable off an easy to use tablet type PC.

Gates demo'd an early version of this a few years back....it will be coming...and will replace a lot of books as we know them.

The early versions were too small, too cumbersome to read and offered little "value added"...but that will change.

Never assume the first version of anything.....is what the public will end up with. Once the idea is out there.... we tend to jump in and improve the heck out of it.

By the way, you will be able to highlight these books....and make little margin notes.... and the system...will then give you "your own personal version of cliff notes". so kewl

and as you are reading...you will be able to "share" copy and paste a section and whip it out as an IM or an email message...or email the page....or even beam it.

You will be able to make up tests.... take tests, have them automatically scored...or sent to your professor....

I swear ....it gets more interesting...everyday.
