I think the problem is that he's stupid and greedy. He wouldn't deliberately commit treason, because at bottom, he's not really interested in politics, much less ideologies. He's interested in money.
So he very likely cut some unsavory deals with Russians. He'd have seen that as "doing business", no more. He never imagined he'd win the presidency, so he didn't let it bother him.
But now Mueller's getting closer, and Trumpty doesn't know what to do.
