Partial onset seizures are now referred to as Focal Seizures given the standardized nomenclature developed by th ILAE. A seizure is a sudden, rhythmic and excessive discharge or organized electrical activity with a part of focus of the cerebral cortex (partial onset seizure) of the whole brain himself (generalized seizure).

It is inherently difficult to conduct proper trials for adults given the ethical conundrum of using placebo control groups which exposes patients to excessive risk. It is even further difficult to conduct these trials in children.

The ability to extrapolate data from adult populations to Peds populations will make it easier for drugs to gain indications for pediatric usage.
