Tigers-A's looks like a great series ... Winner should take the [World] Series.
Well, Jim Leyland proved me wrong, and whipped a good Oakland squad. I give Leyland the edge over LaRussa (and anyone else), and the Tigers look better than the Cards up and down; pitching, fielding, hitting, and in the training room. I remain in agreement with the Seattle writer who had this to say about the ALCS:
There is enough quality pitching in this series, in fact, that whoever wins it ought to lend one starter to the depleted Mets or Cardinals just to make the World Series sporting.
My pick: Tigers in 5. Not that I was very right about the ALCS (I picked the A's in 6), but I sure did nail down that NLCS, except Game 6, in which I picked the Cards (albeit before the series started).
Great effort by the Mets, by the way, lotta gutsy play. During the regular season I had a hard time imagining that any AL team would be able to compete with them, and then the wheels fell off their rotation just before the postseason began. A very tough break, and a terrible shame that both teams were as banged up as they were.
