A treaty intended to limit the United States and Russia’s long-range nuclear arsenals officially takes effect today. But the once-promising treaty, signed eight years ago by President Obama, is overshadowed by a new nuclear arms race sparked by President Trump. On Friday, the Trump administration unveiled its new nuclear weapons strategy, which involves spending at least $1.2 trillion to upgrade the United States’ nuclear arsenal, including developing some completely new nuclear weapons. Prominent anti-nuclear advocates have denounced the Pentagon’s plan as “radical” and “extreme.” For more, we speak with Beatrice Fihn, executive director of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons [ http://www.icanw.org/ ]. https://www.democracynow.org/2018/2/5/head_of_nobel_peace_prize_winning[with embedded video, and transcript]
As Paul Ryan Touts a Secretary’s $1.50 Weekly Pay Hike, Koch Bros. Reap $1.4B from GOP Tax Plan
Published on Feb 5, 2018 by Democracy Now!
This weekend, House Speaker Paul Ryan touted a story of a woman whose paycheck increased by $1.50 cents a week as a major benefit to middle-class workers. On Saturday, Ryan tweeted a link to an Associated Press report, writing, “A secretary at a public high school in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, said she was pleasantly surprised her pay went up $1.50 a week … she said [that] will more than cover her Costco membership for the year.” After a deluge of ridicule and outrage, Ryan deleted the tweet hours later. For more, we speak with Richard Wolff, emeritus professor of economics at University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and visiting professor at The New School. The Philadelphia Eagles stunned the sports world by beating the New England Patriots Sunday night in Minneapolis with a 41-to-33 win in Super Bowl LII, the first-ever title for the Eagles. Dr. Harry Edwards: It’s Despicable for Dodge to Use MLK’s Words to Peddle Trucks During Super Bowl
Published on Feb 5, 2018 by Democracy Now!
The Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots Sunday night in Minneapolis with a 41-to-33 win in Super Bowl LII, the first-ever title for the Eagles. The upset capped a historic year of racial justice protests across the league, with players kneeling during the national anthem to demand justice and an end to police brutality. One of the most controversial ads during Sunday night’s Super Bowl involved carmaker Dodge using the audio of a Martin Luther King Jr. speech to sell Ram trucks. For more on the controversy and the history of racial justice protests in professional sports, we speak with Dr. Harry Edwards, professor emeritus of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of several books, including “The Revolt of the Black Athlete,” reissued last year for its 50th anniversary edition. He was the architect of the 1968 Olympic Project for Human Rights. The ultimate irony: the religion that so often claims to have a monopoly on morality is based on appealing to people's desire to have a get-out-of-jail-free card for literally everything immoral they've ever done.
Donald Trump knows a lot of numbers. Some “very big,” some “catastrophically low,” others “staggering” or just plain “ridiculous.”
Much has been made of the president’s rhetorical style, which by his own admission relies heavily on hyperbole. But it’s especially apparent when he delves into math and analytics. Trump rarely gives data without attaching descriptors that tell us exactly how to feel about that data. Often when he’s talking about numbers, he ditches specifics altogether, in favor of superlatives.
In several instances, Trump has even acknowledged concealing exact details from his audience. During his campaign, this became a recurring trope whenever he was discussing insurance premiums. “I know the number. I will not tell you,” Trump said at a rally in Iowa. “I never do this with any of the groups; I don’t say the number, because it’s so depressing.”
In a sense, Trump has created his own nebulous numeric system that employs adjectives in lieu of traditional numerals. To illustrate, we’ve created this compilation of the president counting from “a negative number” to “the biggest number ever,” in his exuberant if imprecise style.
Problems have plagued the US Census Bureau in recent decades.
The 2020 census was added to the Government Accountability Office’s list of programs with a high-risk of failure. And failing to accurately count the population would threaten the integrity of the country’s most authoritative dataset that drives public policy.
Because the census is used in for a myriad of democratic functions, it’s important that the US gets it right. But now the Department of Justice has proposed to change the 2020 form, which could create further problems for the bureau.
The Republic waits for justice as the entire Clinton Obama crime cabal has been exposed, yet the Democrats and leftist media are still going with the Trump Russia collusion delusion, and trying to distract from the devastating Nunes memo. Meanwhile, the stock market has taken major setbacks in the last week, with record loses happening today. With a pre-meditated media attack on Trump, one most wonder if his isn't an economic attack to blame on Trump.

Devin Nunes' Democratic Opponent Is Raising Money Off His Memo (HBO)
Published on Feb 5, 2018 by VICE News
Within 72 hours of Devin Nunes’ memo dropping, his Democratic opponent raked in over $300,000 in protest contributions.
Andrew Janz is a first-time candidate, running as a Democrat to take over the Congressional seat from incumbent Devin Nunes. But you would be forgiven for not knowing much about Janz’s platform – his campaign’s first big win came from putting up a billboard making fun of Nunes and Donald Trump.
This seems like a bad idea in a traditionally Republican district in which Nunes won handily last time around, and where Donald Trump has a strong support base.
But it seems to be working. Janz just opened up his official campaign office on Friday, and Nunes’ memo has had the effect of actually getting his opponent extra attention.
“Every time he opens his mouth,” Janz says, “we set records raising money.”
VICE News went to Clovis to find out how the memo is affecting Central Californian politics.
