Buffett invested quite differently at first. That was his "Cigar Butt Period" when he'd buy cheap, troubled stocks that he described as being like discarded cigar butts plucked from the trash, that still offered a few good puffs. He also tried shorting stocks early on with poor results. He and Mungar tested charting but gave up. BRK, a textile firm, was a typical early Buffett buy, a deeply distressed firm. He's called it his worst investment... and his best.

What I've always wondered about Buffett was how much money he inherited. His father died young, in 1960. We know his father was a respected US Congressman (a Republican) for several terms. Later his dad owned a small stock brokerage business in Nebraska. Warren Buffett had lots of things going for him from the start in addition to his drive and brains.

Articles about Buffett almost invariably confuse Buffett's wealth with that of Berkshire Hathaway. There were outside investors almost from the start.
