John F. Kelly’s suggestion that "compromise” could have stopped the Civil War touched off an angry debate on Tuesday about the meaning of the conflict that served as the latest reminder that the 1860s was not the only time of political polarization in the country’s history.
Mr. Kelly, the White House chief of staff and a retired general who seems to moving from the role of quiet backstage manager to open partisan, told Laura Ingraham of the Fox News Channel on Monday night that “Robert E. Lee was an honorable man” who had prioritized his loyalty to Virginia over fealty to the country.
“It was always loyalty to state first back in those days,” Mr. Kelly said, when asked about the decision by a church congregation in Virginia to remove memorials honoring George Washington and Lee, commanding general of the rebel Army of Northern Virginia.
“Now it’s different today,” he said. “But the lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War.”
On Valentine’s Day in 2001, the heads of the major television news networks went to Capitol Hill to answer hard questions about the poor job they had done on Election Day.
In a buck-stops-with-us moment, they were resolute about doing better. And they were contrite — even the Fox News founder and chief executive, Roger Ailes, a famous bully who rarely shied from a fight.
“We let our viewers down,” Mr. Ailes said. “It will not happen again.”
The networks were on the hot seat because their election-night coverage had contributed to the chaos of that shambolic evening. They declared Al Gore the winner in Florida before all of the state’s polls were closed — and then they called it for George W. Bush, although the results remained in doubt for weeks.
In the months that followed, the news organizations agreed on the basic facts, if not on every detail. And under bipartisan pressure from Congress, they moved swiftly to fix their flawed election-night projection system.
Look at us now. As the country grapples with a still more serious affront to American democracy, the agreement on the basic facts in the mainstream news media does not extend to Rupert Murdoch’s media empire and other important parts of the conservative media.

Trump didn't dismiss idea when foreign policy adviser suggested setting up Putin meeting Washington (CNN) — Candidate Donald Trump did not dismiss the idea of arranging a meeting with Russia's president when it was suggested in a meeting with his campaign foreign policy advisers last year, according to a person in the room. The idea was raised by George Papadopoulos as he introduced himself at a March 2016 meeting of the Republican candidate's foreign policy advisers, according to a court filing. "He didn't say yes and he didn't say no," the official said, declining to be more specific about Trump's response to Papadopoulos. But the chairman of Trump's national security team, then Alabama senator and now attorney general Jeff Sessions, shut down the idea of a Putin meeting at the March 31, 2016, gathering, according to the source. His reaction was confirmed with another source who had discussed Session's role. [...] http://www.cnn.com/2017/11/01/politics/trump-putin-meeting/index.html

[White] Hartford Student Charged After Boasting About Contaminating [Black] Roommate’s Belongings A student at the University of Hartford in Connecticut was charged with criminal mischief and expelled from school after boasting about having contaminated her roommate’s toothbrush, face lotion and other belongings in an effort to drive her from the room. The student, Brianna Brochu, 18, was in court on Wednesday for charges that originated with an Instagram post in which she said that she had finally accomplished what had apparently been a long-held goal: ridding herself of her dorm roommate, Chennel Rowe, whom she referred to as “Jamaican Barbie.” “After one and a half months spitting in her coconut oil, putting moldy clam dip in her lotions, rubbing used tampons on her backpack, putting her toothbrush places where the sun doesn’t shine, and so much more, I can finally say goodbye to Jamaican Barbie,” said the post, which has since been deleted. Ms. Brochu is white; Ms. Rowe is black. [...] https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/01/us/brianna-brochu-hartford.html
Young, White and wearing this symbol? You are a racist The recent White hate group fueled rhetoric has shown the faces of the new racists. These young White men no longer wear hoods and sheets to hide from the public. Instead, they proudly expose their face and wear everyday clothing and symbols that reveal their racist beliefs. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) estimates that there are over 900 organized active hate groups are operating in the United States. One such group is called Identity Evropa, and they wear business attire, khaki pants and polo shirts with a pyramid symbol. This group has been seen recruiting across college campuses and members are considered radicalized with hate. The group is identified as a racist organization by the Anti-Defamation League and the state of New Jersey’s Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness and is designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group. According to the SPLC, Identity Evropa is “Based on the model of European Identitarian groups. Nathan Benjamin Damigo launched Identity Evropa from his grandparents’ compound in Oakdale, California. Identity Evropa focuses on recruiting college-aged, White students in order to discuss “race realism” and White interests, targeting disaffected young men by branding itself as a fraternity and social club.” The group was founded in 2016 and distributes White pride posters and pamphlets and boasts hundreds of young members who subscribe to the concept of White elitism. The racist slogan “You will not replace us” originates from the group, according to the Anti-Defamation League. https://rollingout.com/2017/08/16/young-white-and-wearing-this-symbol-means-that-person-is-a-racist/
New anti-Gillespie ad sparked by worries about Northam’s appeal to minorities A television ad depicting minority children running from a pickup truck sporting a bumper sticker for Virginia Republican Ed Gillespie is designed to criticize the gubernatorial candidate’s ties to President Trump — and to address concerns that Democratic candidate Ralph Northam is struggling to connect with minority voters, according to people familiar with the strategy. The ad was removed late Tuesday after a terrorism attack in New York City involved a pickup truck running down people on a bike path. But before it was removed, it was designed to appeal to Latino voters. Public polling shows Northam easily beating Gillespie among black and Latino voters, but a recent private poll shared widely among minority advocacy groups sparked worry about the Democrat’s appeal. Northam’s campaign urged the groups not to release the poll’s findings, according to multiple people familiar with the matter — a point not disputed by his campaign. In the weeks since the poll was conducted, progressive groups have worked to tie Gillespie to Trump, whose approval rating among Latinos nationwide hovers in the teens. They worry that if Gillespie wins, his campaign ads — which raised concerns about illegal immigration and “sanctuary cities” and voiced support for Confederate-era monuments — could be replicated nationwide next year by GOP candidates eager to turn out conservative voters. Congressman Says It’s ‘Quite Possible’ A Special Election Was Stolen From A Democrat Amid an inquiry into a wiped election server, Georgia’s chief election official said there is no evidence to support the suggestion. A Georgia Democratic congressman suggested one of his colleagues may not have been legitimately elected, saying it was “quite possible” a special congressional election was “stolen” and given to the Republican candidate in June. Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) questioned whether Rep. Karen Handel (R-Ga.) really defeated Democrat Jon Ossoff in a closely watched congressional special election in June. There are lingering questions about the security of Georgia’s election systems after a server hosting voter information was wiped clean amid a lawsuit over Georgia’s election systems. “I think it’s quite possible that Jon Ossoff won that election and the election was stolen from him. That’s my suspicion,” Johnson told WXIA on Monday. Handel defeated Ossoff by just over 9,200 votes in the June contest that was closely watched nationally because of Ossoff’s unexpected strength in the race. Candice Broce, a spokeswoman for Secretary of State Brian Kemp (R), who is charged with overseeing the state’s election systems, dismissed Johnson’s claim. “There is zero evidence that Georgia’s voting equipment has ever been manipulated. We stand by the results. His assertions are ridiculous,” she wrote in an email. In August 2016, a cybersecurity researcher exposed serious holes in Georgia’s election security network and was able to access voter registration records as well as passwords poll workers used to access a main server on Election Day. A group of voting rights advocates sued in July, challenging the certification of the results. Shortly after the suit was filed, officials at Kennesaw State University, which manages the server, wiped it clean, eliminating any potential evidence of election tampering. The school has said it only wiped the server after the local FBI office made a copy and it was following standard procedures. It’s unclear whether the FBI still has its copy of the server, according to The Associated Press. Johnson’s doubt over the election results underscores the lingering uncertainty over the integrity of U.S. election systems after attempted Russian hacking last year. The Department of Homeland Security only recently notified the 21 states Russian hackers targeted last year, and election officials in some states have accused the department of giving them bad information. President Donald Trump has also stoked uncertainty by repeatedly claiming he would have won the popular vote had it not been for widespread voter fraud, a claim not supported by evidence. Ossoff, who once worked for Johnson, said he accepts the election results and Handel is a legitimately elected representative.
