I'm sure that's true. But at least by now, there's also defensiveness. As I said before, many people who comment on the AL.com site seem to feel their state is embarrassingly "backward".

Alabama is the kind of Southern state where the folks allow in what they figure will benefit them in some way and exclude the rest....Alabama ranks #14 in U.S. states that rely on Federal Aid, 34.9%.
