#132868 RE: HappyLibrarian #132866

Nothing gets through that noise. When you have to get in the mud with the puny guys, you look puny and muddy too.... And the media and most readers have a great deal of difficulty making out what is going on and where the truth lies. As we saw with AF's false claim that the halt was still on, and Bloomberg repeating it and having to be convinced it was not true by an additional SEC filing, untruths get repeated, over and over again, even when they are long proven untrue. Shorts have made a game of constantly repeating here, and elsewhere, and in publications, untruths. The overwhelm the truth and people are often skeptical of persons or institutions defending themselves and readily believe bystanders, when they don't understand their possible motivations. We see that in the use of troll accounts and bots on twitter. That's the nature of modern wars in PR. We see it in our own politics. WIth tiny biotechs and new technologies, it's even more hopeless.

Often attributed to Mark Twain, but not his:

“A lie will go round the world while truth is pulling its boots on.”
C. H. Spurgeon, Gems from Spurgeon (1859). An earlier version appears in the Portland (Me.) Gazette, Sept. 5, 1820: “Falsehood will fly from Maine to Georgia, while truth is pulling her boots on.” Still earlier, Jonathan Swift wrote in The Examiner, Nov. 9, 1710: “Falsehood flies, and the truth comes limping after it.”
