As long as you are talking "if", I can offer another explanation. It's possible that in spite of all the good websites and benchmarks touting Conroe, that a large percentage of the world still isn't aware of it and are basing their buying decisions off of the perception of a few moths ago. It isn't necessarily ABI that would cause a person to buy Athlon X2 over Core 2. Never underestimate the effect of generation computing ignorance among the masses.
I have a friend, for example, who bought a Pentium 4 Prescott based laptop, and he hates it because it has little to no battery life, while getting extremely hot on the bottom. Of course, his excuse is that he doesn't bother to research his new PCs all that well, and simply goes for whatever the salesperson recommends. And this guy does programming for a living, so you'd think he'd know better. I wonder how many other people are like that.
