Russia brace to launch 3 satellites

03:12:35 È.Ù
Moscow, July 27 - The Russian space troops are readying to launch three satellites of the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), Tass learnt on Sunday at the headquarters of the Russian space troops.

According to the headquarters, GLONASS performs all tasks in the interests of defence.

The launching is planned from the Baikonur cosmodrome this Autumn. It will be a special one.

The payload of three spacecraft includes the updated satellite GLONASS-M.

This spacecraft has a service life in orbit of over seven years and broader functional possibilities.

In 2004, specialists will start flying tests of a small-size satellite, GLONASS-K, with a period of active service life of at least ten years.

The operating satellites of the GLONASS system have a three-year service life.

GLONASS is a system of dual designation. It is used for non-stop transmission of information on exact whereabouts of air, sea, land and space objects.

The GLONASS orbital group now consists of 13 spacecraft. All of them are used for the above purposes.
