Neil Woodford keeps a text saved on his phone from a doctor who has spent years caring for seriously ill cancer patients. The message describes a promising treatment for brain cancer, called DCVax. Although the drug has not yet been approved for use anywhere in the world, the doctor insists it works and could save lives.

The veteran fund manager sometimes reads the text to those who doubt his wisdom in owning 25% of the company developing the treatment, Northwest Biotherapeutics.
