Patsy - Regarding Slow Computers
A major reason a Windows computer slows down is that many software manufacturers set up their software to have the registry start tasks in the background upon bootup. Everytime you install a new program, this potentially can happen and you really cannot clean it up with standard windows tools.
An example is I have a program for my digital camera called "Photo Loader", if I don't clean it up after I use it, a task called "plauto" runs everytime I start the machine and my machine crawls.
Here is how you can tell if your system is bogged down by software:
1) Right mouse click on "My Computer"
2) Select "Properties"
3) Select "Performance"
4) Look at "System Resources", it will give a percentage, over 90% means your computer is running very clean, if you can get over 80% running a virus scan you are doing well. Less then say 70% and you probably have software running you don't need which is bogging you down.
The software which is running is best found by pressing <ctrl><alt><delete>, just like when a program hangs. There you get a list of programs which are taking up resources. There are only 2 Must have programs and they are "Explorer" and "Systray". After this you probably have some anti-virus software running. If you have more than this, you may have some programs taking up resources that you no longer use but were never cleaned up right.
Take a look when your system is lagging, there are some very good and inexpensive programs out that can clean this up for you and help you take care of this. From my experience, paying attention to the resources has solved more headaches than all the standard system utilities.
