it's just damned tough legally for a public figure to successfully sue for libel/slander/defamation -- on balance, clearly a very good thing; an important part of keeping our First Amendment a strong protection of free speech
and beyond that, there are always the tactical considerations, such as 'if I sue, does that just draw even more attention to the false statements?', and 'if I sue, does that just make me look like an enemy of free speech?'
