Looks like a "settlement" to me as well. Oops! I imagine a scenario something like..."Now that it looks like this is all real, we better give these guys a piece of the action." On the plus side this is cleared up before the anticipated acquisition.
Regarding a broader license, I expect the company to be sold before any other applications are developed. I prefer the narrower license if the broader one would have given up a bigger percentage.
