Martin, I don't know about connecting to the net, but I do know that you have to be very careful about your power adapter. My mother bought an adapter from a travel store at home, used it to plug in her Mac in Rome, and blew out half her display screen (along with the power in half the hotel).
This is only a partial answer but last year when i did Europe i found that every city from Dublin to LeHavre has tons of internet cafes charging well under $3 a hour to go online. It was a pleasent experience, i got to mingle with locals and i did all my online business w/o dragging along my labtop and figuring how to make it work overthere. Along the way i met other tourists who brought labtops but learned to prefer the internet cafes because of various trials and tribulations they encountered with their labtops. Hope this info helps.
