Maybe Madison was just another "liberal college town." Maybe Portland was just another "liberal New England city."

But what about Phoenix? Yeah, the Phoenix, Arizona with the crazy right-wing sheriff that forces prisoners to live in tents in the desert and has a right-wing governor who wags her finger in the face of Barack Obama. Just another "liberal" city, right? Bernie certainly has no "mainstream appeal," right? Well, look at this, my friends.

Folks, I'm getting excited. Very excited. Bernie's "town meeting" has become a convention center rally. And the "town meeting" -- excuse me, convention center rally -- isn't even happening until this Saturday, July 18. Perhaps we'll see 10,000?

In this video, Brad Steinle, the brother of the woman slain by an undocumented immigrant slams Donald Trump for having the audacity to use her tragic death to excuse his racism against hispanic immigrants.

“I would hope that people would reach out and get our views, and our input in whats going on. You hear Donald Trump talking about Kate Steinle like he knows her. I’ve never heard a word from his campaign manager, never heard a word from him. Its disconcerting and I don’t want to be affiliated with someone who doesn’t have the common courtesy to reach out and ask about our political views and what we want.”

“If you’re gonna use somebody’s name and sensationalize the death of a beauty young lady,” he said, “maybe you should call and talk to the family first and see what their views are.”

Trump Understands Americans’ Needs Better Than The Rest of the GOP Field

Donald J. Trump is known as a celebrity above all, and although some voters see his celebrity as an indication of style over substance, we would argue that this style is the very substance that elevates his candidacy above the rest of the GOP field. The role of the POTUS has evolved in lockstep with the media-obsessed culture of 21st-century America and it is the power of Trump’s celebrity and image that makes him the right candidate at the right time for the struggling GOP. Trump’s unique brand of media ubiquity—whether on social media or primetime TV— lends him a highly valuable ability to both understand what Americans want and enact change to satisfy those needs.

In reality, “celebrity” is a reductive characterization of the work Trump has been involved in over the past four decades. Through his work at The Trump Organization, Trump has been one of America’s most prolific job creators. As one of the only candidates who understands the impact that both global warming allegations and China have had on United States manufacturing, Trump stands in a unique position to cite the cause of the United States’ jobs crisis and enact legislation to fix it. The threat of China also underscores a key opportunity for the aforementioned power of Trump’s image to reaffirm the United States’ footing in the global economy. This is something that the current administration has unfortunately failed to do time and time again on the global stage. Both Trump’s candor at the podium and presence in the media make him a figure that the world knows and is interested in hearing from.

His endless dedication to widening employment opportunities extends beyond the Trump Organization and into his many entertainment endeavors. The creative methods and avenues through which Trump has created jobs would likely make (former Crimson editor-in-chief) Franklin D. Roosevelt ‘03 smile. For instance, his work at The Celebrity Apprentice has allowed him to reach out to celebrities who have been inactive or troubled and help them to redefine their careers through business education and brand building. These same celebrities are able to create jobs after their exposure on his show, a creative domino effect of job building that almost every other GOP candidate aside from Texas’s Rick Perry fails to match.

Another Republican challenger—New Jersey’s Chris Christie—has centered his campaign around the idea of “telling it like it is.” Yet this can only be construed as a reaction to the vocal and tough talking attitude that has emanated from the Trump camp on a near-daily basis since his June 16 announcement. Although Trump’s views can be polarizing, you only have to look at his Twitter feed to understand the influence Trump’s frankness has had. With 3 million followers (and growing daily), Trump reigns supreme over any other candidate in the Republican field in terms of social media presence. This is an advantage that young voters truly care about, because we want to be able to interact with our politicians on our computers and phones and therefore have our voices heard. This is not your grandpa’s politics. The politics of 2016 is about clicks and pageviews, whether we want to admit it or not. Social media—a tool the Crimson also uses to interact with readers—has the ability to spread messages in an immediate and powerful way. Based on his advanced online presence, it is undeniable that the public is listening to Trump’s message. In a time of bipartisan logjams in Congress, only a concerted control of public opinion will allow politicians to move the needle in the tense Congressional arena.

But our leaders actually need to understand Americans’ opinions in order to make correct decisions. This happens to be a skill Trump possesses in spades. As surprising as it may sound, the success of The Apprentice franchise speaks to Trump’s understanding of our polarized post-Obama American culture. No other GOP candidate can attest to such a cultural phenomenon. This keen ability to understand the American psyche—a “politics of empathy” that has been not-incorrectly compared to that of President Reagan—is absolutely vital in today’s fractious global climate. This comes as Washington’s current misunderstanding of this global climate grows more and more dangerous. Most notably, the current administration misunderstands both the reality of the Islamic State as a global threat and the militaristic and ideological motives that guide ISIS. Trump has made it clear that he understands Americans’ fears and has a nuanced understanding of ISIS’s ideological justifications. It is hard to imagine a Trump presidency that is “soft” on ISIS, which is essential for any viable candidate.

The Crimson has in the past voiced its disapproval regarding the direction of American conservative politics in the 21st century. While Trump’s candidacy cannot be seen as a panacea to all of the GOP’s problems, he is undoubtedly the candidate who best understands the direction the party must go in in order to maintain national relevance. Donald Trump’s ability to strike a chord with the American people and understand their fears makes him the most formidable and competitive candidate on the Republican side. No matter your party affiliation, the Crimson is certain in its hypothesis that a competitive general election is a victory for all Americans and a testament to our democracy’s strength.

Harvard Lampoon tricks Trump with fake endorsement

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump appears to be the latest victim [ http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2015/8/3/lampoon-prank-trump-chair/ ] in the longstanding rivalry between storied humor publication The Harvard Lampoon and its more staid alter ego, The Harvard Crimson.

A running gag between the two august institutions involves the theft of the Crimson president’s chair by members of the Lampoon — or Poonsters — and its use as a prop in a variety of increasingly mischievous schemes.

The latest such misadventure involved spiriting the chair away to the Trump Tower in New York City, where it played a part in convincing the building’s namesake that he was being honored with a highly coveted Harvard Crimson endorsement.

Poonsters, posing as Crimson staffers, snapped photos with a smiling Trump seated on the president’s chair, and later published a rave review of the real estate mogul, calling him "the most formidable and competitive candidate on the Republican side.”

The faux endorsement was posted on a faux Crimson website [ http://thecrimson.co/article/2015/7/13/crimson-supports-donald-j-trump/ (above)] that appeared indistinguishable from the original.

When the Trump campaign reached out recently to the real Harvard Crimson to speak with the real Crimson president, Steven S. Lee, the prank finally unraveled.

“They recognized the situation once we had chatted, and it seemed like they were going to take care of it, whatever that means,” Lee told his paper’s Flyby blog [ http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2015/8/3/lampoon-prank-trump-chair/ ].

“The students who perpetrated this are fraudsters and liars, but frankly it was a waste of only a few minutes,” Donald Trump spokesperson Hope Hicks told The Hill. "Mr. Trump attended the great Wharton School of Finance,” Hicks added, "a school that has more important things to do."
