Looks like Joel Stein needs some vouchers for a new fax/scanner and for some decent letterhead.
Wow, for a guy who has a decent office address, that's really embarrassing (both the scan/fax quality and the letterhead design). Looks like he had his second grade daughter do the letterhead design. I wonder if he's using a virtual office at that address. Guys taking CJA work are not exactly flush. Their rate is capped at low hourly rate and the total fees are capped also by the nature of the crime(s) charged (for a pre-specified total amount) - and they basically get minimal other resources.
If you're unable to afford decent counsel, try to ask for a Federal Public Defender rather than a CJA panel appointee. You need to do this right away - when booked refuse to talk and demand to speak to a Federal Public Defender immediately. Once they see you, tell them you want to be represented by the Federal Public Defernder office counsel and not a CJA appointee. This is no guarantee, but it may get your request considered by the panel that will decide to assign you either a CJA lawyer or a Federal Public Defender.
Just a pro-tip for indigents like Dave Foley who wound up with a novice IP lawyer defending him in felony white collar crimes via a CJA appointment.
BIG Bennie - take note! I'm throwing you another nugget of info you need to take up.
