Windsock - The life of AMD and its AMD64 may be very short lived.

One thing that's clear to me is that discussions of AMD's finances on a board like this tend to be ignored and disregarded by AMD fans. No matter how dire the situation is regarding AMD's balance sheet, the belief is that there will always be some other, more deep pocketed company who will take them over and carry on the fight to topple bag, bad Intel.

Does AMD management really have a viable business model that will sustain not only self-sufficiency but long-term growth? Will they generate enough profits to fund their R&D for K9 and beyond, as well as the development of deeper sub-micron processes? Or do they just assume that some other company (as IBM has done now) will take pity on them and bail them out at just the right moment? How do you plan for a miracle?

My guess is that AMD's creditors are going to panic when AMD's cash drops below $500,000,000

What exactly do you mean by 'panic'. Can they renege on existing credit agreements, or are you just saying that AMD won't be able to borrow new cash?

Windsock, on IA32 longevity

Does the IA32 binary architecture that has been around since 1985 count as "at least a decade" ?

Yes, you're right. I intended my focus to be on longevity going forward, i.e. from now, but didn't make that clear.

I believe that AMD's IP in AMD64 and Mirrorbit are too valuable to ever disappear. Even if AMD, the company, goes bankrupt, these assets will be carried forward by some other agent.
