RD, disagree...Of course I don't know all the numbers but Netflix has for the longest time had a very big affiliate program, along with aggressive internet banner advertising. For awhile there, you couldn't go anywhere online without seeing Netflix banners.
IMO, that's why the subs came in for them, not TV ads.
