So that means ...

A realistically "basic" MB laptop starts at nearly $1,500.

With the shared RAM drain from the GMA graphics, not to mention the basic needs of OS X, the default 512 MB of RAM just doesn't cut it. There's little point in shelling out $1200 for a laptop with a freakin' combo drive. And for all but Granny, fairly pointless to try and scrape by on a 60 GB HD.

So $1,299 base, plus $100 for the RAM and $50 to get to a reasonable 80 GB HD, and you're at $1,449.

Lango - combo vs SuperDrive - different strokes...

I'd prefer to have the option to purchase my computers w/o a SuperDrive. I have an external DVD burner that is just fine for my needs. I use it seldom enough that I prefer sharing one over paying to upgrade every computer purchase.

I agree, a reasonably priced BTO option would satisfy both needs/wants. Again, this may just be the milking of the buyers the first few months. These things do change over time in some cases. This would be a good thing to change - offer both though, don't automatically assume I want to buy a SuperDrive.

Lango, did you ever try to burn a dvd on a portable?
I had a fully fledged 15' AL did it once. Lasted too long. Forgot the dvd burning.
Bought a 12' AL without.
More interesting will it be to see the black books owners try to type in semidark light conditions...
