NUE could be one of CLF’s Bloom-Lake partners, according to sources:

http://online.wsj.com/articles/nucor-in-talks-with-cliffs-over-stake-in-canadian-iron-ore-mine-1414774696

Nucor Corp. is in talks to invest in Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. Bloom Lake iron ore mine in Canada, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Two Japanese steel companies would also be part of the venture, which would allow Cliffs to more than double production at the mine in Quebec to 13.5 million tons a year. The total capital expenditure required would be $1.2 billion. The three partners, along with Wuhan Iron and Steel Co., an existing partner, would buy the iron ore produced at the mine.

According to CLF's 3Q14 CC, the new Bloom Lake partners together with Wuhan will own a 47% equity stake in the mine and will ink long-term contracts for 100% of the production.

Stay tuned.

CLF

In broader strokes what the CEO dispelled are the notions that CLF is a high cost producer and that the company is strongly tied to (and essentially a proxy for) the seaborne price of iron ore

PS: This was the most entertaining cc i've listened to in a long time - perhaps ever

CLF sells portion of coal business for $175M in cash:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/cliffs-natural-resources-inc-enters-110000977.html

Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its Logan County Coal assets in southern West Virginia to Coronado Coal II LLC for US$175 million in cash and the assumption of certain liabilities. Cliffs anticipates using the cash proceeds from the sale for debt repayment.

Cliffs other U.S. coal assets, Oak Grove mine in Alabama and Pinnacle mine in West Virginia, are unaffected by this transaction. The Company stated that it will continue to explore sale options for its other coal assets. The $175M sale per se won’t make much difference, but this is a start. The Oak Grove and Pinnacle mines should garner a larger sale price than Logan County.

The accounting for the Logan County sale will result in a capital loss of $375-$425M (pre-tax) to be booked in 4Q14.
