Um, this was Apple's factory - you think they must have done some DD before they got into it.
They should be aware of the crystalline structure of sapphire and the how it might shatter. Anyone who's worked with gemstones knows that scratch resistance (how easily it polishes which is just micro scratching) and how easily a stone breaks are two different issues - IMO Apple was responsible for this DD before they approached GTAT.
There is something Apple doesn't want us to know here.
