Question, what exactly do you have plugged into any and all usb ports on your desktop right now. Screen of death on boot up can be a zillion things, but driver issues are high up there I have learned the hard way.
A troubleshooting technique that's no impact that comes from Microsoft (I don't have the link) that may be worth thinking about is to unplug any usb device except your mouse and keyboard if they are usb and reboot a few times to see if it happens.
Ever try rebooting with the phone plugged in? I also believe it's beneficial to do hard boots, not win restart icon.
I'll assume you've already looked in device manager for any thing weird and little yellow triangles.
Phone note...I got a free 'semi smart' phone deal with my verizon carrier, a microsoft Kin. Incredible 8mg camera at the time, incredible piece of shit anything else. It was free because microsoft had already taken it off the market 2 and half months after it went on the market...lol..a year before I got it. Verizon advertised nothing that this phone was already dumped and spit on. I got it for the camera and big type. Unfortunately, the type was not big nor could be changed like the ad had mentioned.....total flop.
