in the one third of the US that are the occupied provinces of México, spanish predates english, it is the tongue of the indígena therein, it is rich in nuance and literature, highly useful, it is spoken by the majority of souls in these Américas, it rather makes sense to use it, officially or otherwise

I don't completely understand your statement... one third of the US? Are you talking about CA for example? When you said "spoken by the majority" are you talking about these areas? CA for instance?

marcos...

While I see where you are coming from, I completely disagree with your conclusion. The object behind compulsory use of English as the "official" language of the US is to mitigate the same thinking that you espouse elsewhere in your post - the "occupied Mexican provinces". They are not Mexican, being entirely a part of the United States (legally paid for, I might add) - get over it. Should the French still have a claim on the land acquired under the Louisiana Purchase?? I think not.

The idea that has made America great is that immigrants come here as Irish, German, Dutch, Italian, or a myriad of other nationalities but become Americans. While they brought some of the culture and traditions from the "old country" here with them (to our benefit), they all learned English as their primary language (sometimes it took a generation) and were absorbed into the fabric of the nation. Now, we are encouraging the opposite, which you espouse - keep the language and culture as if they never left the "old country".

The result of that will be much the same as is now occurring in Canada, with the French separatists wanting their own country and culture. Your speaking of the "the one third of the US that are the occupied provinces of México" is living proof of the fallacy of the "new" approach, and it must be eliminated with a return to the idea of America being a "melting pot" where over time there are no "Irish Americans", "native Americans", "Mexican Americans", "African Americans" or whatever else - we should all strive to just become "Americans" without the prefix and bound together by a common language - English - and a common nationality - American.
