Doji, nsomniyak's advice was good, if you really want to get your hands dirty, search OTC Markets, under Market Activity, then Corporate Actions, then Caveat Emptor. Don't overwhelm yourself, screen them in specific share price ranges. Then check each stocks summary and find what state they were incorporated in. Then go to that state's secretary of state business search and search for the status. Nevada has one of the friendliest business search sites.
Another strategy is to pin point stocks with small share structures that have been inactive for a year or two, pick up just small positions and regularly check their status.
