Not only that but think about the coming diabetes explosion or epidemic .

From the standpoint of the Chinese gvt, it is not acceptable that designer drugs like Byetta or Bydureon (I just pick them because I happen to know them) becomes the SOC. The population can't afford them. For a widespread condition and a population with limited ability to pay, it makes sense to me that whatever policy the central gvt decides to choose, it has to fit their situation.

I see no problem with western solutions that the Chinese has no equivalency even if it is expensive.

But when they catch up with you, it will be no surprise to me that they intend to benefit their own native companies. It is just good old mercantilism. WHat I don't quite understand is why such blatant behavior/policy has been tolerated by the West for so long.

Politics affect trade among countries, is that really a new revelation? Almost all Asian countries including more advanced countries like Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan are nationalistic in a way, the difference is only degree. Japan had closed competition to outside in agriculture and some other sectors, known reform was needed to sustain growth for the past 20 years but unable to do anything until now. For example,

The question to me is whether these are temporary or permanent. I don't think anyone knows for sure. Any country regardless of size needs to open up to outside competition to various degrees to ensure long term prosperity. China has opened up to outside dramatically compared to 30 years ago, but hasn't been up to the standard many have demanded. I don't think it should be expected in such short period of time due to its miraculous rise in the past 20 years - culture change takes time, see other Asian countries. China should be mindful of the path Japan has taken, should know opening up to outside competition can only make them better in the long run. There might be twist and turn in between - no one can predict how long those twist and turn would last - I just don't buy China will be able to depend on its own entirely to sustain its growth unless it wants to become another Japan of the past 20 years.
