Windows 8.1 stuck on update.

Last night my sons computer running 8.1 said there was an update and he should restart the computer. He did and this morning it says its at 1 of 8 and to keep the PC on until its done, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Can he just reboot out of this and then go and check for updates, would this cause a problem?
