Mickey, some of those short shares are held by Longs who want to make sure at least part of their profits are locked in. People always refer to all people who short as evil, trolls, counter-capitalist etc., but that couldn't be further from the truth*.

*Granted, the big part of the shares sold short are probably people who are outright betting IDCC stock will fall, but a good part of the most recent 2 million shares probably are owned by IDCC stockholders who are hedging their investment somewhat after the shares more than tripled.

Oh yeah, for the record I haven't started hedging or anything of the sort at this time. Typically after a run like the last, I would at least cash out a % of my IDCC investment ("free" shares and all) and rebalance -- but damn it all, after all these years I just have to bend a little. While in '99 "slowly" cashing everything out between $20 - $44 turned out to be the smart move, there is just no way I can't wait until next week to see what's what. IDCC seems to be an entirely different company, fundamentally, than it was 4 years ago.
