Apple doesn't buy companies just because they can. They are quite frugal in their purchases. There has to be a specific purpose or need. In LQMT, Apple already owns what they need.
And, there is good reason for Apple to be stockpiling their cash. IMHO, the company's future plans to initiate an international electronic payment system will require having a huge stash. They are making money hand over fist in their own area; they are not interested in branching out or in acquiring an metal/alloys company.
