As far as actually predicting things, they are no better than you or I.

JP Morgan is raising it's price point slightly to see what effect it's 'bet' will have on the action. Think of it like a poker game. No one wants to be the buffoon who goes all in preflop. This is a cash game: we have all night.

So JP Morgan has slowly upped the pot and wants to read the reactions of it's opponents.

There's a lot of problems with that analogy, but there's a lot that's true about it too.
