I mean, seriously. Why not sign the petition? It's worth a try.

This idea was floated yesterday by Eric Dubin at SilverDoctors.

If you sign the petition and nothing ever comes of it, you'll have given away about one minute of your life that you won't get back. Otherwise, I don't see much downside to trying.
