Some while back I met someone socially who is on a kind of "efficiency committee" at a major local hospital. Her committee is charged with reducing costs and improving efficiency. The hospital is applying some degree of pressure to doctors to standardize on specific medical devices so they can reap buying and efficiency benefits. As you can well imagine, it's not proceeding altogether smoothly. They can't mandate use of specific devices, but they can make the doctors jump through some hoops to use their own choice of device.
