"Evolution" is a key word that you often use in describing life's progress. Unfortunately it took me an early retirement to begin working on my survival skills, some of which I once possessed when I was a kid. In between there were colleges and an office career. I laughingly describe the latter office work not as 33 years experience, rather one year's experience 33 times. Unfortunately, I think many jobs in modern life are like that.

I can never relate to what you've accomplished. But one thing I can say about you and others on this board. All of you motivated me to expand my gardens and learn about the dynamics of soil.

This summer I had a second garden on a Ruth Stout type of arrangement, a 36-inch deep compost bed. Here is one example of an eggplant, which was watered three times during a hot summer:



I have six bales of straw rotting away and these and more leaves will be spread on all of my garden beds next season. It is the only way to go for me.
