VALE—The disparity relates to non-operating items such as the nominal change in VALE's balance-sheet items caused by changes in the exchange rate between the Brazilian Real and other currencies.

Bottom line: VALE's 2Q13 was a solid quarter. The shares are +2% today in Sao Paulo and New York.
