Because surely, people wouldn’t file for patents if they thought that they weren’t going to make any money.

I am a patented inventor, and can tell you first hand a few reasons why a good invention should be patented without the need to make any money. Being an absent minded genius, I might forget a few as well.

If you look at the number of utility patents issued by the US government, you will probably find fewer issued than Master's degrees. You might find less than PhD's. Some people think that a college education is a paper chase, and that many degrees don't end up bearing fruit.

Your patent could bear fruit without ever going to market, because other inventors will be able to "piggyback" their technology upon yours with a design patent, or a utility enhancement. The entire database of patents worldwide is an intellectual goldmine. You simply have to start digging. Entrepreneurs can find the patent, and make money where inventors lack that talent.

I couldn't sell snowshoes or hot water bottles to eskimos, but a good salesperson could sell them ice cubes. A patent grant will not give you selling skills. It won't teach you how to make your product profitable.

To get this "on topic" I would suggest that some stock promoters are better sales people than the CEO of Redpoint.
