A traveling preacher attended a dinner given by the great American philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. The preacher spoke at length of his own devoutness and integrity. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote of the event: "The more the preacher proclaimed his honor, the faster we counted our spoons."
