Two large counties in northern VA - Loudoun and Prince William Counties - went to the Dems on election day, which was a major blow to the Reps. The Reps were certain Jerry Kilgore would carry these two counties just as Reps always had.
As for GWB not hurting Kilgore, he should have stuck to his original gameplan of staying away from GWB as he did when Bush came to VA in October, but he got desperate 2 days before election day and the kiss of death was being seen as GWB's candidate.
I agree JK was a terrible candidate, but NOBODY would deny VA is a BRIGHT RED STATE. Or...perhaps I should say "WAS". When I commented to my mailman shortly before election day I was surprised at so little campaign junk mail, he said "I'll be glad when the election is over, too many Democratic Catholics are moving into this state from up north".
Outgoing Gov Mark Warner(D) is leaving office with a 70% approval rating - not bad at all.
