maybe half to 3/4 of the performance of an x86 part scaled down to the same power envelope ... But the question remains - why would anyone in a year and a half from now be interested in spending any amount of money to "upgrade" their MacBook Air/Pro class machine from 2009-2010 to something with ~about the same performance, when there will be machines with Intel processors available at the same time?

Did you notice that the iPad created an entirely new market and completely disrupted the PC space with a very slow and crappy A9 processor to start?
It's possible that Apple will innovate on the platform like they did with iPad. What if it's an upgrade from an iPad instead of a downgrade from a MacBook?
As I've mentioned before there is a large pricing gap between iPad and MacBook. Apple can fill it with another device and still keep x86 macs in the lineup at the higher price ranges.
You seem to forget the rule of incumbency, which requires that you offer a much better experience than the market leader in order to change the market.
You conveniently seem to forget that rule when talking about Intel phones and tablets.
Apple can offer innovations at the platform level. It's not just about the CPU.
