Zeev, Before the bombing of London and other of England's cities was the bombing of German cities in August of 1940. I believe Churchill and Portal did this in hopes of heavy German retaliation, which they got. The German bombings of London in September 1940 put an end to the calls for peace with Germany. This also changed American opinion from neutral. It's all a game. You sacrifice your civilians for propaganda gains.
The bombing of Dresden was done for vengeance, plain and simple. The enemy was aleady defeated. Not to even mention the thousands of Allied prisoners of war being held in the city.
