Bebe warns of huge profit miss (BEBE) By Jennifer Waters
Bebe stores said late Thursday that it will miss profit projections by a wide margin for the fiscal third quarter. The sexy women's apparel and accessories retailer expects earnings of 3 cents a share for the quarter, well below the 11 cents a share estimate at Multex. Same-store sales for the quarter are expected to be negative in the low to mid teens. The company blamed higher markdowns and costlier manufacturing for the shortfall. Last week, Bebe reported a 15.2 percent drop in February's same-store sales, far deeper than the 9.9 decline expected by analysts. Ahead of the news, Bebe (BEBE) shares closed higher by $1.08, or 8.1 percent, to $13.35.
