No question that Lucent has been a strong player in the "narrowband" CDMA infrastructure biz, but they are well behind Ericsson, NEC, and our old pal Nokia in the W-CDMA base station biz(which, by the way, is where something like 85% of the 3G market is headed!).

I'm guessing that Lucent is gonna need to find a competitive edge if they are going to have a shot at winning a decent slice of that W-CDMA base station biz at this point in time.

Hmmmmm.....wonder if Bill Merritt happened to mention IDCC's W-CDMA-"WTDD" cohort tech for W-CDMA "FDD"? If he did(?), hope it went something like this(i.e., Bill Merritt talking to Lucent);

"You know, before we wrap this Tantivy matter up I've got something you might find interesting. Wanna build W-CDMA-"FDD" base stations with enough turbo boost to blow even the wildest WLAN dreams back into the weeds? Lucent could be the first company to offer wireless operators that kind of high capacity 3G equipment if you move fast. My guys will help if you decide to go that way."

IMO it would be just dandy if that is what the IDCC/Lucent "advanced technology" partnership is about, i.e., teaming up to blast Nokia's WTDD road block out of the way.
