I hope for a full review soon.
And I will give one, once I have a chance to play around with it a little more.
Early impressions are generally good, but I've had a few issues. My biggest downside is that it once locked up on me (totally unforgivable, since I've only had it for a few days, and I was doing nothing more than playing a few music files in the music store). Other things that have bothered me is frequent loss of wireless activity when you restart the system from rest, and some of the confusing ways Windows 8 is setup, which is unintuitive. I chalk this up to general Microsoft products, which really need a 2nd generation to get things right (examples: Win Vista vs. Win7, Win2k vs. WinME, Office '10 vs. Office '07, etc.)
Fortunately, it's easy to get used to once you give it some time. For example, it's a pain to figure out how to move the tiles around. You actually need to touch them until they shake, and then move them in the up or down direction (NOT left or right). For the longest time, the tiles would just slip from under my finger while I was trying to reorder them, and I was getting frustrated, because it's not like there's a tutorial for how to do things, and I would have thought that ANY direction should work for reordering them. But no... you have to first move them up or down to "unhinge" them, and *then* you can move them left or right. Retarded.
Also, I can't seem to figure out how to resize the tiles. The settings menus are also rather spartan (I guess to keep them clean), but I see a lot of options I would never change, while missing a lot of options that I think would have been more useful. Resizing the tiles seems like it would make things more configurable, since some of them seem larger than necessary, while others don't seem large enough. Even Android allows some widgets to be of various sizes. Is Windows 8 fixed? That would be bizarre.
Onto things I like - since that was more of a rant about what to me are kind of "nits". I really like using Windows 8, especially the mega side-swiping nature of the interface. You swipe from the left for multi-tasking, swipe from the right for charms (search, print, settings, etc), swipe from the top and hold for closing a program or moving it to a multi-tasking plane, or swipe from the bottom to bring up options in certain applications. But it's not just where you swipe, but *how* you swipe. It's unintuitive at first, but when you get used to it, Windows 8 really flies. I like it.
The content is also very impressive. Microsoft included all the right apps to begin with, and with a library of music, videos, and apps, it's like a complete online store, even this early in the ecosystem. Yes, it's true that a ton of Android and iOS equivalent apps are missing, but new apps seem to get loaded every day. There's a ton of stuff, and everything is there to get started.
General usability is also good. The Samsung ATIV is a great, lightweight tablet that's easy to hold and fun to use. Clover Trail has "good enough" performance, and well optimized for Windows 8. 95% of what you do is fluid and fast, but there are occasional slowdowns. I gave one example already, but there are many cases when you're going around the various content stores and excited to try things out, but the computer suddenly gets unresponsive. It's that lag that ruins the experience, at least for me.
In terms of how I use the tablet, I much prefer it over an iPad. The iPad is just too limited IMO. I am of course referring to the iPad2 that I own, and I haven't really spent a lot of time with the newer ones, but it's not like much has changed in how you use them. Microsoft seems to have a much richer feel. The news apps really beat the iPad equivalent. The images are high res and perfectly fitted, and the display is large enough to read it like a newspaper. The same goes for Internet browsing, which is *so* much faster (than iPad2, at least).
By the way, the keyboard base for the ATIV was sold out, so I've only been using the tablet side, and I'm already impressed. I am currently typing up this review on my Ultrabook, when I could be using the tablet, so that's at least one example where I think I real keyboard is necessary. I brought up iHub on the tablet, and it's great for reading people's posts, but I hesitate to post something this large without a real keyboard.
With all that said, it still seems like there is a lot left to say, but I'll save it for a future post.
