I said it in jest as I would not participate, but this is where America has left its Constitutional roots. The federal government has no authority under the constitution to pass drug laws. Just 100 years ago this was understood and the people passed prohibition. We changed our constitution to give the Federal government authority in that situation. The 10th amendment relegates these decisions to the states.

If the people of CO wanted it legalized then that is their right. I probably would have voted for it on two grounds. 1st would have asserted our right over the federal government and more importantly I believe Thomas Aquinas was right when he said:

".... This is not an unusual perspective in the Christian tradition as well. In the Treatise on Law in his Summa Theologica, Thomas Aquinas explains (citing Augustine) that not all vices should be punished by the law. Human laws should chiefly forbid those things that cause direct physical harm to others; Aquinas offers murder and theft as examples. With regard to practices that do not physically harm or defraud others(whatever other intangible grief they may cause), it can be necessary to tolerate them if prohibiting them would lead to still further evils..."
