The new software was just an add-on. The WSJ article suggests that it was intended to work with the new NYSE software. Obviously it didn't.

As for being helped "earlier"... Earlier than what? All this began yesterday morning. Any potential buyer--or even lender--needs at least a little time to assess risk and free up some money.
