LinkedIn's business is made up of three parts:

Advertising. As we'll see below, LinkedIn is a pageview monster, and so it quite sensibly makes money from that by running ads.
Premium subscriptions. LinkedIn sells subscriptions to people who want premium features.
Hiring solutions. "Hiring Solutions" is the big one--nearly 50% of revenue--and also the company's biggest opportunity. LinkedIn is a giant database of resumes, which includes resumes of people who aren't currently looking for a job (on average, the most attractive potential hires). Companies and recruiters pay a lot of money to be able to troll the database.
