If you view the Federal Government as a business (yes, yes, I know) the whole PPT thing makes a lot of sense. While the Feds may not be collecting much in capital gains taxes anymore, they still need the economy running well to collect much in other kinds of taxes, and I think that they have (rightly) concluded that, if the market tanks, so will the economy.

BTW, I'm glad to see that you think that such jamming may have been profitable in the past, when they could exit after the momentum players took over. I've been told repeatedly that a deep-pockets player cannot bid up a stock and then bail out without losing all his profits on the exit. I think it happens all the time, though. It used to be even more common, back before so many of the mo-mo guys went broke.
